The Greek Orthodox Church and Community of Coventry was established in 1964. The first Divine liturgy was held at St Anne’s Anglican Church on Acacia Avenue and was presided by Archbishop Athengoras II on the 6thSeptember.
The community continued to rent St Anne’s Church and then St Alban’s church, Barras Heath, until 6thMay 1977 when services commenced at the newly acquired church building at Westwood Heath. The Church was Consecrated the following year on the 28thMay 1978.
The Church has subsequently been extended twice to meet the needs of the ever-growing congregation.
At the core of the community is the Greek School which started in the early 1960’s at various rented locations in the city. In 1988 three class rooms were built next to the church. Six years later a purpose-built hall, St George’s Hall and seven more classrooms were built on land at the rear of the church.
In addition to the elected committee which runs the day to day affairs of the community; The community is also supported by the Ladies auxiliary committee which was established in 1966 with St John the Merciful as its patron.
